A very divisive subject that I would like to touch upon as I do and have used faux in lots of ways. While fresh flowers will always be my personal preference there are many circumstances where they are not always possible to use. I have been lucky enough to be asked to create Wedding flowers for brides marrying abroad and wanting to take their flowers with them as well as brides wanting to keep every aspect of their flowers as it was on the day, customers wanting a long-lasting arrangement & customers concerned with allergies. My first Wedding this year has already been collected for a Wedding later in the year, a mix of faux and dried flowers for the bouquet and buttonholes. Artificial flowers are much improved in terms of quality & availability and in many circumstances, it is impossible to tell them from the fresh. The biggest advantage is of course that florists can prepare well in advance, nothing dies, nothing wilts and this can be one of our biggest stresses. As I sit typing out this post it has just been announced that this 1st May has been the hottest ever recorded and the hot weather is a major concern for all florists. There are many things to worry about but hot weather is up there as one of the biggest cause of stress, especially during Wedding season. Planning and preparation take time and working with fresh flowers means everything is quite last minute, but we need time to create and judging the best time to order in flowers & when to start
creating in hot weather = sleepless nights.
Faux flowers can be re-used, artificial foliage can be used as a base for fresh to be added into, they have their place in many aspects. I have on occasion used a mix of 95% fresh and added 5% artificial to achieve the outcome required by the Bride & Groom, there are many reasons for this and to give just one example, to include a flower colour not available in fresh. Once arranged with the rest of the fresh flowers and foliage you honestly would never know but to be honest, don’t be afraid to hide the fact.
Every Bride, Groom & customer’s requirements are personal to them and trust put in me to advise and create this for them. It is your day, your occasion & your hard-earned money paying for them after all and getting it just right for you is my job & my passion.
