Mother’s Day is one of those occasions in a florist’s calendar where you know it’s all going to get a little bit crazy. I love though the prep, the early preparation of deciding what products to offer, looking through the wholesale sundries to find something different, something I can use to create something new and designing the whole arrangement. My years of competing and learning my craft have given me the skills to be able to design and create and although for competition purposes the outcome wasn’t for a retail situation the process of design is still relevant and very much the same. I think about texture, colour combinations, functionality, practicality and of course will anyone want to buy it. I’m sure experts would tell me otherwise but I like to make what I would like to buy…it seems to have worked ok for me so far.
As you know I like to use eco-friendly wrapping as much as possible, bouquets wrapped with decorative papers and flower vases using a re-useable or recyclable container. I get quite excited about decorative paper….not sure if I should admit that or not but I think I am at an age where it’s perfectly ok to admit things that years ago I would have preferred to keep to myself! They are available in so many colours and patterns, although I prefer the plain colour or natural kraft paper, it allows the flowers do all the talking without any competition surrounding them. You would be shocked at the amount of cellophane we get our flowers delivered in from wholesalers so I like to try and keep it one way and not send more of it back out again, I know for some of you this is a very important part of what I do and why you choose to order from me.
So…the paper has been chosen and a long list of sundries….no really, the list is so long, has been ordered in and is waiting to be used this weekend. I’m spending the early part of this week folding paper, tissue paper, ribboning vases, preparing the gift bags and deciding on this year’s choice of flowers….no spoilers so you’ll just have to wait and see. I am like a child in a sweet shop choosing flowers, I love to choose new varieties and colours, seasonality is always important and incorporating your Spring favourites into each design is a must also.
Mother’s Day can also be difficult, for those Mum’s no longer with us it is a day of memory and sadness that we cannot be with them, they are never forgotten and always remembered & flowers are very much part of our remembrance with posies of flowers or little planted pots of Spring bulbs.
Mother’s Day is a day of love, lots and lots of love and I shall be delivering my own Mum’s flowers on Sunday once all our collections are done & Mr Bloom has finished with all the deliveries, good old Mr Bloom, honestly couldn’t do this without him, he’s always got a smile, always happy to help & always reliable….you do need good staff!
Below is a picture of Mum & me firstly enjoying a day visiting a National Garden Scheme garden a few years ago and the other is myself as a babe in arms, it actually took me far too long to find a photo and so has reminded me that I need to take more, many more….
So, here we go….thinking of all the hard working florists giving it their all this week and thank you to you for your orders, I very much appreciate your support of this very small but very much loved business.
Wishing you all a very Happy Mother’s Day
